Studies on the wild Rhododendron brachycarpum in Korea (3)

Abstract
Rhododendron brachycarpum grown widely over the area of high mountains of Kangweon province is regarded to have an ornamental value as an evergreen broad-leaved shrub of shade loving and cold resistant nature. This shrub is now considered worth for exploiting as an outstanding garden plant.
The present experiments were carried out to find out growth environments, propagation and cultural requirements of this shrubs.
The results obtained are as follows;
1. The adequate soils for Rhododendron brachycarpum growth was recommended to prepare a mixture of perlite and peat for 1 to 1 ratio, and the optimum pH for that was observed 4.5 to 5.0.
2. The optimum temperature for growth and development was found to be 20¡É, and the optimum moisture for that was shown to be 88 percent.
3. Transplanted wild Rhododendron brachycarpum showed healthy growth with shaded environmental condition (10% light intensity), therefore they can be cultivated for garden plants in Korea.
4. Growth habit and requirements of environment for wild Rhododendron brachycarpum showed a great similarity to those of cultivated rhododendrons grown in Europe and North America today, and these environments may well be applicable as proper cultural measures to Rhododendron brachycarpum when grown as a horticultural ornamental plant.
